Global Youth Service Day/Month 2024
Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service 2024
We returned to McKay Bay with our partners The Florida Aquarium, The Mission Continues, Roots N' Shoots, and DeSoto Elementary to continue our work on invasive species removal, park cleanup, and hurricane debris removal. We had 175+ volunteers join us.
9/11 Day of Service and Remembrance
Learn and Serve Tampa Inc partnered with several organizations to create service opportunities for youth to memorialize the victims of 9/11 and service Tampa's food insecure population. Franklin BPA learned about the role of the firefighters and place a memorial for them on the front lawn of their school. Tinker K-12 created biographies for many victims, but a stormy day prevented the placement of markers as scheduled. Veterans Approved Network and the American Legion Post in Lutz helped set up a memorial funded by Toyota and produced by American Visual Brands. Pizzo K-8 students made biographies for the victims of the Pentagon attack. On 9/11, many corporate volunteers and 128 college students participated in the 9/11day.org meal-packing event at the Yuengling Center at USF.

Veterans Day
Veterans Day 2022 was greatly impacted by Hurricane Nicole. The Franklin BPA ceremony had to be postponed and will be rescheduled for a later date. The CRISP ceremony was held indoors at the Sheraton on Riverwalk.
Rampello K-8 AVID students learned about Veterans Day, Gold Star Families, and Woody Williams, and chose to make challenge coin boxes as gifts for veterans. Boxes were handed out at the CRISP Ceremony and at the USO station in Tampa International
Students in Franklin BPA's art classes participated in the #SpiritofWoodyWilliamsChallenge and used their talents to create a portrait of their hero.
Memorial Day Gold Star Display
Monday, May 30, 2022
This year for memorial Day, Franklin students helped research and prepare a display of Tampa's Fallen from the War on Terror. The AVID students added images and paper roses for those families who were in attendance for the ceremony. Sixth grade BPA student Gabriel Mendieta volunteered to serve as the host for the event.
Flags of our Fallen Escorts
Monday, April 4, 2022
Flags of Honor Escorts made a stop in Tampa, first at the Franklin Boys Preparatory Academy Gold Star Families Memorial Monument and then in downtown Tampa at MacDill Park. The students at Franklin BPA created two wreaths for the riders to lay at the monuments. Each wreath contained the names of our local fallen. The students learned about the importance of sacrifice from the founder of the Flags of Honor Escorts, David "Stupid" McCoy. They loved being able to say "Stupid"!
Remembering Our Fallen
Wednesday, March 16-Sunday, March 20, 2022
This memorial display was brought to Tampa by the CRISP Foundation. Learn and Serve Tampa, Inc. supported the project by located volunteers to assist with building the portable memorial and also breaking it down. In the process, I met a wonderful group of young members, the Air Force Sergeants Association, who believe community service is a responsibility. This project is also an example of how one does community mapping, locating people and resources in your own community who can work together to achieve goals. This project generated an idea for Memorial Day. See above for the outcome!
Veterans Day @ MacDill Park on Riverwalk
November 11, 2021
A collaboration between AVID Teacher Lauren Kartali, CRISP Foundation, LabelValue Corporation, and Learn and Serve Tampa, Inc. resulted in amazing remembrance gifts for veterans in the Tampa community and civic engagement for 7th and 8th grade students at Rampello Partnership K-8. Students took a walking field trip to MacDill Park to see the Gold Star Families Memorial Monument and talk with Gold Star Mother Holly Ross and CRISP Founder Calvin Reed about recognizing the service of veterans and remembering the sacrifices of service members and their families. The students designed and created a unique Patriotic wind chime for the guests of the Veterans Day ceremony held at MacDill park on November 11, 2021. The students made a colorful banner that veteran guests signed. The banner will go back to Rampello for display. Additional wind chimes were delivered to American Legion Post to be shared with members.
Patriot Day Display @ Franklin BPA
September 10, 2021
Franklin Boys Preparatory Academy's Social Studies Department teamed up with Learn and Support Our Troops, Inc., LabelValue Corp., and Serve Tampa, Inc. to create markers for all victims of the September 11, 2001 attacks. The markers were assembled by students and placed on the front lawn of the campus for the community to visit on patriot Day weekend. Students had lessons before and after the service activity to learn about the causes, events, and effects of 9/11.
